Working With Children
As our project involves working with and filming young children we did some research into the restrictions and limitations this could involve.
The BBC's child protection policy states (relevant to our project);
The BBC's child protection policy states (relevant to our project);
- Children and young people should be treated with care, respect and dignity.
- A risk assessment should be carried out when children undertake BBC activities.
- BBC Productions and events involving visits to school should write to the school of event organiser concerned to advise them of all plans.
- Use of all material must first be run by event organisers and parents, must have permission to share material online and on television.
As well as ourselves and the students, our risk assessment must take into account working with children:
- the lack of awareness of risks and immaturity of children and young people, also if a child has a disability or special educational needs, these risks may be different.
- the area in which the child is working and the type of equipment (if any) they are use and how this equipment should be correctly handled.
- any tasks they will need to perform (e.g. walking from centre to school)
About The Project
The brief for this terms community project was: "Make a short documentary promoting the community work of the BRIT School"
Our group was allocated, Selhurst Childrens Centre, a project run by Kerry Western.
(http://www.selhurstchildrenscentre.co.uk/). The centre looks after children ages 2-4.5 and has a range of family support provisions.
The project consisted of Interactive Media students creating a video/animated year book. Each student worked with a child from the centre to create a short video clip.
Our group needed to capture the students working on the project and the preparation leading up to the final show. As working with children had some limitations (see post above). It had taken us a while to get permission to film the children. However we were able to film the children getting ready to leave the centre, and then walking down to the BRIT School and finally their reactions to the final presentation.
We also got some before the presentation and after the presentation interviews with two students, Dino and Chris, to break up the footage of the project.
